Biography / CV of Nicholas Webster

Here is Nick Webster, married to Wendy with five grown up children and four grandchildren to date. From a very early age nick enjoyed playing with clay from his garden and soon realised he could make things with it. That was the start. He attended Reigate school of art and design for five years where He did a 2 year foundation course and 3 years specializing in sculpture and 3d work. He obtained His higher surrey diploma in 1983... In 1983 Nick also married and had their first child followed by four more over the coming years. Nick and family lived in cornwall for three years where with their growing family he took on some farm work to help make ends meet. The family moved back to surrey in 1989 where he took on a job as school caretaker in their childrens school. It was convenient at the time. Nick ended up staying there for 24 years. During that time he took clay modelling classes with all the year groups on the given subject at the time. Very rewarding. Over the years Nick has continued to create all types of art work using all sorts of materials for family and friends and themselves
but never taken the plunge into making it a full time business until now. Nick has an interest in history specifically medieval history and folklore which comes to life in some of his work. One of Nicks absolute passions is the west country and he has a piece of land in south west cornwall which was left too him when his father passed away. Nick works from home and sometimes in the peace and solitude of south west Cornwall.

"The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful."
